Women
in Music
Over the decades, women have found themselves struggling
to get role in the music industry. Issues such as sexism and discrimination have
played a huge part in the delay of women progress in the industry. Still today,
many women are starting to speak out about certain things that they have to face
in order to find hold a position in the industry. Recent article, “Women’s Music Industry Horror Stories:
Abuse, Sexism, and Erasure” by Amy Zimmerman.
Editor Jessica Hooper speaks on some of the issues that women face in
the industry and how certain issues go unaddressed. In the article, by Zimmerman,
Editor Hooper, also asked twitter to help her answer some question regarding women
accomplishments in the industry. There’s no doubt that women face many different
struggles than men when in the industry. However, over the years there has been significant
increase of women taking on more roles in the industry. Moreover, although many women still feel as if the issues of sexism, and
discrimination may never go away. There’s
are many people who believe that in educating women on the the issues of the industry
will help find solutions to find equality.
Women in Music is
a group of individuals who are dedicated to help educate women, by through educational,
seminar, and network events. This group was founded in 1985 to help bring awareness
to women who are interested in the industry (http://womeninmusic.org/web/). The
group is celebrating it’s third decade of service this year in NYC.
There’s no doubt
that women are subjected to face discrimination when competing in a male dominant
industry. However, It is up to the women who are committed to help change the
views of how women should be treated that will play a huge role in ending
sexism in the music industry.
